Now Beau was only half of the equation. We needed a brood mare that matched his confirmation and temperament to start our program. We found “Baby Chicks Bruce” in 1989 in a colleague’s pasture. They approached us to see if we wanted another horse. They were having problems with this horse as she had a foal on her and these people not having a lot of knowledge with horses stated, she was mean and they couldn’t get near her. They just threw her hay twice a day. After looking at her papers and seeing this mare, we immediately made an agreement to purchase her. Again, she had never been handled! So, after a year of working with this mare, we were finally able to bring this mare and Beau together to start our breeding Program. “Baby Chicks” grandfather was the great “Three Chicks” an AQHA champion at Halter with many sons and daughters’ champions on the track. And so, our breeding program began. “Baby Chick” had her last foal in 2009 at the age of 24, “AQH Lucy”. She was then turned out to pasture and died peacefully at the age of 32 in 2017. AQH Lucy is now in our brood mare herd.
